I recently upgraded to Firefox 6.0 and had problems launching Pixel Perfect (v1.6.1) ever since. According to the plugin’s add-on page this version is not yet available for Firefox 6.0, and other users are already reporting such issues on the plugin’s github page.
The following is a quick D.I.Y. alternative to this add-on which I’m using while waiting for a new version to be released.
First, save the overlay image in your website’s root folder. Then, simply paste the following code just before the </body> tag:
<div style=”position:absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: auto; height: auto; opacity: 0.5; z-index:1000;”><img src=”overlay.png”/></div>
where overlay.png refers to the overlay image exported in step 1. After refreshing the page, you can refine the position of the layer by changing the top and left values, and also the opacity value through the Web Developer add-on.
To be honest, I’ve been using this approach for some time now to test and make sure that text and other content is properly aligned to the website’s baseline grid across all browsers. The following snippet adds a semi-transparent 6px baseline grid on top of all the other layers:
<div style=”position:absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%; opacity: 0.5; background: url(‘grid.png’) repeat; z-index: 1000;”></div>
where grid.png is a 6px high transparent image with a 1px stroke aligned to its bottom. Again, make sure that you save this image in your website’s root folder.
You can toggle the visibility of these overlays by adding display:none; within the style=”“ declaration and then switch this on or off through the Web Developer add-on.
The new Android GUI PSD Teehan+Lax is, as expected, an excellent resource for mobile designers. All of the elements are vector, as well, and it’s already set up for the default Android size and pixel density.

‘Movies with a View’ is a summer movie series held on Thursdays by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. Last week we managed to secure a spot on the limited lawn to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
With DJ’s from Brooklyn Radio warming up the party, and discounted drinks after the show, it’s definitely an event to check out. Crooklyn is on this Thursday.
Honda’s site was featured on Web Design Served by Behance. Honored to see my work next to other amazing websites.
I finally managed to find some time to update my own portfolio. New items include UI/icon design for an iPhone App, artwork and layout design for an upcoming book, brochures and general icons.

They say that time flies when you’re having fun. This past year has been amazing with a few pleasant surprises along the way, and while it was not always easy, it was definitely one to remember.
The story so far
On April 1st (no joke!) I decided to become a full time freelancer so that I could spend all of my time on design and freelance projects. Back then I was not sure if this was the right thing to do or if it will be enough to support me. Now, I can safely say that this was the best decision I ever made and one that I will never regret. Since then there have been many important events that have helped me shape my career as a freelancer. These include taking on new big clients, being featured on design galleries and blogs as well as being invited to join dribbble.
So what’s next?
Projects which kept me busy during 2010 will be launched officially in the coming months, while new ones are already in the works. Projects aside, my main intention for 2011 is to focus more on design and to write up some interesting blog posts. This will definitely keep me busy throughout the upcoming year.
Thank you
It’s been an amazing year and I hope you all had a great one too. May I take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for all your support and words of encouragement. I wish you all a prosperous new year full of pleasant surprises!
